The Lanesville Lemmels

There are two Lemmel branches which originate from the same root in Lanesville, Indiana. See the two tables above.

Table1 shows the descendants of David Lemmel, a farmer in Lanesville, Indiana. Much of the information about this branch was contributed from Mrs. Angela Melhiser Grant whose grandmother was Freda Lemmel from Lanesville. Additional information came from Joann Lemmel, wife of Freda's nephew Russell Lemmel in Lanesville.

Table 2 shows the descendants of John Lemmel who was orphaned at an early age and was raised by his uncle David Lemmel in Lanesville. Among his descendants I got first in contact with the pianist Larry Lemmel and his wife Kathryn, also a pianist, who both attended a reunion of the Lemmel families in 1965 in Wiesbaden on the Rhine. Larry's mother Ethel Burroughs Lemmel provided information on this branch, later supplemented by information from other family members and other sources.

David Lemmel's father was John Lemmel who immigrated to the United States in 1832. He died on 7 May 1851 "60 years old". Hence he was born in 1791, and his birth place was not known.

In order to find out where John Lemmel came from, one should try to find his name in passenger lists of the immigration boats around 1832, either in the European port, or in the US port where the immigrants were registered. My research in this direction was not successful, so far.

Many of the US Lemmels in the Central US states came from Alsace, the German-language province in the northeast of France. In the 1990's I did a systematic research in the (mostly protestant) church records of Alsace, and here I discovered finally the birth entry of Johannes Lemmel, born on 28 January 1791 in Breunsheim (also called Printzheim), northwest of Strasbourg. His further ancestors lived in Melsheim nearby, where the first Lemmel, coming from Switzerland, settled in 1668.

The church records list neither Johannes' death nor his wedding, and this means, that he must have emigrated. Hence, there is not yet a direct proof that he is the one who came to the US in 1832; but it is most likely, because in my fairly complete files about all the Lemmels there is no other suitable John or Johannes Lemmel. Hopefully, a better proof will be found later.

The immigrant John Lemmel is supposed to have immigrated in 1832. If this date is correct, his wedding (around 1820) and the birth of his first children must have taken place already in Europe. Further research will be required.

For the son Johannes born in 1791 no entry for death or marriage was found in the registers of Breunsheim..
