Sembritzki:  The family branch from Oletzko in Texas

The data of this family branch have been reported
- in 1999 by Ola Sembritzki,  at that time in Victoria, Texas, 403 Joe Beaver Lane,
- and in 2007 by Tina Bowman in Texas <tinajo552000@yahoo.com>, and
- Louise Payne in Lawton, Oklahoma 73507, 310 A NW Ferris,  <vlpayne30@lcisp.com>, assisted by Sandra Enders <sandra.enders@sbcglobal.net>

The common ancestor was Ludwig Sembritzki, born in 1821 in Oletzko, and his wife Caroline Gemballa, born 25 May 1824 in Surminnen. They had five children, two of them were born in Dunayken. In 1872 the family emigrated to the US. The port however is not known. The youngest son, Julius Lewis, was born already in the US. The eldest son, Johann/John, came to the US already in 1865 as a boy, likely to avoid the Prussian military service. The family went first to Oklahoma, then to Texas. The three sons of Ludwig Sembritzki, i.e. Johann, August and Julius Lewis, are the originators of three family branches. In the latter branch the spelling of the name changed from Sembritzki to Sembritzky. (Neither in Germany nor in the US they took the spelling important.)

So far the US knowledge about this family.

The following notes are by Hans Lemmel in Vienna, Austria. - Unfortunately, in my fairly comprehensive database of the Sembritzki families, this Ludwig Sembritzki was not known and cannot be located in the family tree. However, Oletzko is the very center of origin of all the Sembritzki families.

A few words on the geography: The eastern third of the old German Ostpreußen (East Prussia) is the district of Gumbinnen. In the southeastern corner of this district there is the town of Oletzko (also called Marggrabowa or Treuburg). It is the capital of the Kreis Oletzko. (Kreis corresponds approximately to County.) The first Sembritzki documents are here:
> Stanislaw Sembritzki in 1526, and
> Martin Sembritzki in 1570. Martin, having seven sons (their names are not known), is the ancestor of all the following Sembritzki's.

Dunayken, the birthplace of Ludwig's daughters, is only a few miles north of Oletzko but situated in the neighboring Kreis Goldap.

My mother was a Sembritzki, and her ancestors came from the Kreis Oletzko, too. Actually, the grandfather of my greatgrandfather was Gottfried Sembritzki, born in Oletzko in 1766. He was a merchant in Memel and Königsberg, trading with Scotland, where one of his sons was born. And his youngest son, William Sembritzky, born in Königsberg in 1821, emigrated to the US as a manager. It is not known where he stayed and whether he had children.

All genealogical materials that I have originate from my father's research before World War II, including old materials from Oletzko. Unfortunately my father, at that time, did not come across that Ludwig Sembritzki that went to the US in 1872. In 1945 all of East Prussia was totally devastated. East Prussia disappeared from the map, and all the 2 million German inhabitants were either killed or had to flee to West Germany (Stalin's revenge to Hitler's crimes). Consequently, no further research seems to be possible any more.

The US family story saying that a Sembritzki had an inappropriate marriage and was disowned, is quite unlikely. East Prussia was known to be the most tolerant country of Europe inviting refugees from everywhere. But it was a poor country, and many had to emigrate, in particular younger sons who could not inherit the property of the father which came to the eldest son.

About Ludwig's wife Caroline Gemballa from Surminnen: That is a little village a few miles northwest of Dunayken, in the Kreis of Angerburg. Incidentally, I came across an entry in an Address book of 1913 listing a farmer with the name Gemballa in Surminnen (without any further detail).

The Oletzko area is now Polish and was repopulated in the years after 1945 by Polish immigrants. The names of above mentioned towns and villages changed as follows:
Oletzko –> Olecko  (no difference in pronunciation)
    Dunayken –> Dunajek
Surminnen –> seems to have disappeared completely. It was situated near Benkheim, which is now Banie Mazurskie.
    Goldap –> Gołdap
    Angerburg -> Węngorzewo
Gumbinnen, the former capital of the district in which all these places were located, is now situated outside the Polish border in the Russian territory of Kaliningrad (the former German Königsberg).

By the way: In Oletzko you find even now under the Polish rule a "Sembritzki street", probably in Polish spelling "ul. Zembrzicka" or similar.
